Livestock Awareness Training

Suitable for owners who regularly walk in the countryside or want to help their dog develop a safer and more appropriate response around livestock.
Understanding the Importance
Living beside Dartmoor National Park is a privilege, but it also brings responsibility. For many dog owners, sharing the countryside with sheep, cattle and other livestock is a regular part of life.
Livestock worrying is taken extremely seriously because the consequences can be devastating for dogs, livestock and their owners. The law has become tougher, police powers have increased and, in certain circumstances, farmers are legally entitled to shoot a dog that is worrying livestock.
Fortunately, with the right education, appropriate management and realistic expectations, many of these risks can be dramatically reduced.
Prevention is always easier than trying to change an established habit.
This training isn't about making promises that every dog can safely be trusted around livestock. Every dog is an individual and natural prey drive varies enormously. My role is to help you understand your dog, develop appropriate management strategies and, where possible, improve your dog's response around livestock so you can enjoy the countryside more safely and confidently.
What to Expect
Every session begins with a full owner briefing. We'll discuss health and safety, explain exactly how the session will be run and ensure everyone understands what to expect before any practical work begins.
Although training takes place in a small group of no more than three dogs, each owner-and-dog team works individually throughout the session, allowing plenty of individual guidance and support.
My own sheep, kept at my dedicated training facilities, allow carefully controlled training scenarios where the welfare of owners, dogs and livestock always comes first.
How to Join a Session
Livestock Training sessions are advertised through the New Beginnings WhatsApp Community and booked via the Setmore booking system.
If you're new to New Beginnings, simply get in touch. I'll happily explain how the sessions work, answer any questions and help you decide whether Livestock Training is the right option for you and your dog.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age should my dog start livestock training?
The younger the better. Prevention is always easier than trying to change established habits, although dogs of any age may benefit from appropriate training and management.
Will my dog get hurt during training?
No. Safety and welfare are my highest priorities. Every session begins with a full briefing and exercises are carefully managed to protect owners, dogs and livestock.
Can every dog be trusted around livestock?
No. The aim of livestock training is not to make unrealistic promises. Every dog is an individual and natural instincts vary enormously. My role is to help you better understand your dog's behaviour, develop appropriate management strategies and, where possible, improve your dog's response around livestock.
My dog has chased sheep before. Is it too late?
Not necessarily. Every dog is different. We'll assess your dog's behaviour, discuss realistic expectations and focus on the most appropriate combination of education, training and management.
