Scent Detection

A dog's nose is one of the most incredible tools in the natural world. Depending on the breed, it's estimated to be anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than our own, allowing dogs to detect scents that we simply can't begin to imagine.
As a former Police Dog Handler who spent many years working alongside a Police Search Dog, I had the privilege of witnessing that incredible ability every single day. Even now, dogs continue to amaze me with what they're capable of, and I love watching owners discover just how clever their own dogs really are.
Scent Detection gives your dog the opportunity to use one of their greatest natural abilities in a fun, structured and rewarding way whilst strengthening the partnership between the two of you. As your dog learns to trust their nose and you learn to trust your dog, you'll quickly discover that scent work is a true team effort.
It's also one of the most mentally stimulating activities your dog can enjoy. A well-planned scent search can be surprisingly tiring, making scent work an excellent way of providing enrichment, building confidence and encouraging calm, thoughtful problem-solving.

Getting Started

Everyone begins by attending the four-week Introduction to Scent Detection Course.
Designed to teach both you and your dog the foundations of scent detection, the course consists of one session each week with class sizes deliberately kept small, ensuring every owner-and-dog team receives plenty of individual guidance and support.
Although you'll be training as part of a small group, each owner-and-dog team works individually. Every search is tailored to suit the experience and confidence of the individual dog, allowing everyone to progress at their own pace whilst enjoying the encouragement and camaraderie of the group.
Once you've completed the Introduction Course, you'll be invited to join my continuation scent detection sessions. These take place every two weeks (alternating with Tracking), last approximately 2½ hours and are booked on a Pay As You Go basis.
Many owners tell me the continuation sessions become one of the highlights of their fortnight—not only because of the training, but because of the friendships and supportive atmosphere that naturally develop within the group.
